Shooting in Olmito leads to large manhunt
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies and U.S. Border Patrol agents Friday evening were searching for individuals involved in a shootout at an Olmito convenience store.
The shooting took place at approximately 5 p.m. at Calle Anacua along the South Expressway 77/83, said Brownsville police spokesman Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique.
Authorities had few details, but Manrrique said an unidentified man parked his vehicle and went inside the Stripes store. Then another vehicle drove up and began firing into the man’s vehicle.
The man, who had gone into the store, ran outside and began firing at the other vehicle, the spokesman said.
"At this point details are scarce and we have no witnesses," Manrrique said.
Shortly after the shooting, sheriff’s deputies found a black Ford Escape with bullet holes and blood inside, said sheriff’s department Chief Deputy Gus Reyna.
The truck was found at the corner of Calle Los Ranchitos and Calle La Granja in El Ranchito outside the Brownsville city limits.
A large deployment of sheriff’s deputies and Border Patrol agents wearing tactical gear and carrying assault rifles were seen going from house to house searching for anyone who might have been inside the truck.
An hour into the search, members of the USBP Special Response Team arrived and began combing open fields near the area for any route the suspect or suspects might have taken.
After two hours, the search was called off and no arrests were made.
