Jail improvements are reason to cheer

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Editor:

I cried when I read the letter from Jean Krause on Aug. 3, stating that the girls in lockup are getting the help we so desperately wanted for them. Alcohol and drug abuse can be found in all levels of society from Southmost to Rancho Viejo to San Pedro and from blitzed teenagers to the dejected impoverished to people so rich they have nothing to do with themselves. Jail is a horrible but real result for dallying in such dangerous territory.

Maybe we can spark a desire in a few to get their GED. If one goes on to become a nurse, how many lives will have been affected? How about the ones who won't become nurses but will go on to be an inspiration to their children and lead them to living life right? How many lives will have been changed for the better by this outpouring of love shown by the people improving things now?

This could create more self-sufficient households, healthier and more productive children, a drop in the crime rate and a better living environment for all.

I liked that cable TV was replaced by educational programs.

Congratulations to Gail Hanson and Diana Claitor for not doing as so many had done and dismissed Brownsville's women because they screwed up. The mark of a successful person is the ability to take roadblocks and turn them into stepping-stones. A wrong turn on your path does not have to be a dead-end street and now thanks to those who have helped by volunteering their services these women now can choose alternate paths.

Now Brownsville is setting another example on how they are doing it right. Nice to hear something good in the news, right?

Local players among World Series champs

Editor:

Three players from Lopez High School, Beto Rodriguez, Justin Granado and Carlos Rodriguez, and Cristo Torres from Porter High school were invited to join a McAllen all-star baseball team. They won a series here in the Valley and then traveled to Florida where they won a Latin America tournament.

They earned a berth in the Colt World Series in Lafayette, Ind. They beat Puerto Rico 12-2 on Aug. 13 and now are the Colt World Series champions.

We are so proud of happy for them. Good job, guys. Thank you and God bless you all.
