Pastor's statement cannot be justified
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Editor:
How can we watch a preacher say, "God damn America," and then tell us what he really meant? I know he was talking about the plight of the black people and how rough life has been for them.
I am a very patriotic man, and if I heard a preacher say that, he would know how I felt about it and he would not see me in his church again.
Recently trying to justify his actions he explained how things were taken out of context. He said that people just don't understand how African Americans worship.
The American public does not need anyone to explain plain English to them. Barack Obama needs to stop justifying Mr. Wright's actions and look for another church.
I cannot imagine any other presidential candidate belonging to a church that preaches that way and everyone acting like it was nothing.
God has been taken out of our schools and our courts and now we are going to pray that God damn the United States? By a preacher who has a presidential candidate as a member? At what point do we say enough is enough?

Brownsville is more than subsidized golf
Editor:
I am concerned over some Winter Texans' threats that they will move elsewhere if they can no longer avail themselves of subsidized golf. What a shame if their appreciation of our community and its cultural offerings is limited to a golf course!
We have been residents of Brownsville for a long time. We were introduced to the Valley as Winter Texans and decided to relocate here full time. Although retired I manage to be able to pay fees for my golf even without any financial assistance.
I have belonged to Fort Brown Golf Course for years and plan to continue to do so! My heart bleeds that some Winter Texans will depart unless I continue to subsidize their avocation. My one-word reply to them is: Adios!
One final thought: maybe if we stopped subsidizing the golf course, we might have additional resources to fix some of our roads.
