Comments 0 | Recommend 0GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - Hundreds of families displaced when public housing units were damaged by Hurricane Ike could return to renovated homes by late summer.
The Galveston Housing Authority will spend $1.4 million on the projects.
The Galveston County Daily News reported Saturday that Bey Construction in Houston, in the next few days, plans to begin replacing flooring and drywall in 139 apartments.
Councilman Tarris Woods says there is a "fierce urgency" to return the 584 families displaced when Ike on Sept. 13 flooded four of Galveston's six public housing developments.
The housing authority is working with the U.S. Department of Labor to create an apprenticeship program to hire islanders to rehabilitate the developments.
