Harlingen retailers expected to open for holidays

HARLINGEN - Construction at Harlingen Corners is moving along, with some new retailers expected to be open for Christmas.

The project's second phase is under way now, said Jim Gissler, the developer for St. Ives Properties of Dallas, which is building on the 50-acre corner of Expressway 83 and Dixieland Road.

Phase one of the project was the construction of Kohl's and Logan's Roadhouse.

Now those businesses will be joined by a 21,400-square-foot Bed, Bath & Beyond store, which is in progress and will open before Christmas, Gissler said.

The project's phase two will also include a 30,000-square-foot Marshall's, which has a scheduled opening date in February, Gissler said.

Other phase two retailers include Shoe Carnival, McAlister's Deli and Maurice's, a clothing store, Gissler said.

Phases one and two will total about 200,000 square feet.

Maurice's Fashion will occupy 6,000 square feet of space. McAlister's Deli will have a 4,000-square-foot restaurant, according to a news release by The Woodmont Company of Fort Worth, which brokered the leases.

Gissler said there are also plans for several family-style restaurants.

A third phase of the development will likely begin in the spring of 2009 with a fall completion date, Gissler said.

There are no finalized leases for that phase of the project yet, Gissler said, but he said a book store and sporting goods store would be ideal for the development.
