Marshals arrest fugitive wanted in connection with prison break
RIO GRANDE CITY - Authorities arrested a fugitive as the man watered his front lawn Wednesday, more than a decade after he is accused of escaping from a low-security federal prison.
Juan Antonio Garza, 44, didn't run as U.S. Marshals and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers approached the yard and ar-rested him after they received a tip that he was staying with family in the area, U.S. Marshal Dago Lopez said.
"'I am Juan Garza,'" Lopez recalled Garza telling authorities. "‘I know I'm wanted.'"
Garza is accused of escaping from La Tuna Federal Correction Institution in Anthony, Texas, on Oct. 29, 1993. The facility is a low-security prison with a double-fenced perimeter.
At the time of the alleged escape, Garza had more than three years left on his sentence, which stemmed from a charge of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Now, he could face up to five additional years.
Lopez could not provide details of the escape but said that it wasn't "dramatic."
