Scorpions play host to doubleheaders Saturday, Sunday
The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College gets back to business when the Scorpions play host to The University of Houston-Victoria in a four-game series Saturday and Sunday at Scorpion Field.
The Scorpions (1-3) and Jaguars (1-4) meet in doubleheaders at 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. All games are scheduled to go seven innings.
UTB-TSC opened its season Jan. 23 and 24, winning one of four games against No. 14 Wayland Baptist University. The Scorpions played tough throughout the four games, all four of which were save situation games.
UTB-TSC won the season opener, 4-1, but dropped the next three games 2-1, 9-8 and 10-7.
Julian Moya (1-0) and Danny Gidora (0-1) are the expected starters for Saturday’s doubleheader. Moya pitched four innings of shutout baseball against WBU, and Gidora allowed only one earned run in seven innings of work, recording seven strikeouts.
The series will mark the final home games for the Scorpions until March 13. UTB-TSC will visit UH-Victoria for a four-game series Feb. 13 and 14 in Victoria.
The Scorpions are 3-9 all-time against the Jaguars, going 1-5 in 2007 and 2-4 in 2008.
UHV finished the 2009 season with a 34-17 record and won the Association of Independent Institutions tournament to qualify for the opening round of the NAIA national championship. UH-Victoria received votes in the NAIA national preseason poll equivalent to a No. 36 ranking.
UHV is coached by former Houston Astros infielder Terry Puhl.
Admission is free for UTB-TSC faculty, staff and students.
