UTB-TSC News: Scorpions pitching excels in 1-0 win over Doane College

Rory Young and Cale Wierenga combined for a two-hit shutout as the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College edged Doane College (Neb.) 1-0 in the season opener for both teams Thursday night at Scorpion Field.

The Scorpions and Tigers resume their four-game series with a game at 6 p.m. Friday at Scorpion Field. The teams complete the series with a doubleheader at noon Saturday.

Nursing a 1-0 lead, Young held Doane hitless through the first six innings before Albert Thomas singled in the seventh. Young was relieved by Cale Wierenga, who also allowed a hit in the seventh. But Wierenga got out of the jam and pitched two scoreless innings to earn the save.

Young threw 98 pitches, allowed the one hit, struck out six and walked five. Wierenga struck out two and did not walk a batter.

Doane's Chance Brull, who is expected one of the best pitchers in the NAIA this year, went all eight innings for the Tigers. He allowed five hits, struck out eight and walked five. He threw 122 pitches.

The Scorpions scored their only run in the third inning. Joel Fernandez singled down the right-field line, stole second and scored on Gus Henggeler's single down the left-field line.

UTB-TSC had five hits by different hitters. Zach Cordia had the only extra-base hit in the game with a triple off the wall in right-center field in the third inning.
