E-E school board member charged with beating his mother

Second arrest in three weeks

ELSA - Edcouch-Elsa school board member Manuel “Manny” Hernandez Jr. has landed behind bars for the second time in three weeks, police said Wednesday.

Hernandez, 29, of Elsa, is expected to be arraigned today on charges of family violence and cocaine possession.

Elsa police arrested him Tuesday after he allegedly attacked his mother, investigator Armando Rivas said. But Rivas had not been briefed on circumstances surrounding the arrest as of Wednesday morning.

Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputies arrested Hernandez on Oct. 22 for similar accusations involving an attack on an ex-girlfriend at her Monte Alto home. She sustained several bruises to her head and face after he reportedly crawled through her kitchen window and started an argument with her.

He also faces separate misdemeanor family violence charges from a 2006 case.

Hernandez, a former Elsa municipal judge, will likely retain his spot on the board of trustees while district officials assess his situation, Superintendent Michael Sandroussi said at the time of the board member’s October arrest.

School board members can only be removed for incompetence, official misconduct, intoxication or conviction on felony charges, according to the state education code.
