Wall along border doesn't make sense

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Editor:

The issue is simple and straightforward: the proposed wall is an assault on common sense.

It will be very costly to build. It will greatly diminish the quality of life in this area. At every level - familial, social, religious, economic, political - quality of life in this area is enhanced and enriched by the daily steady flow of folks in both directions across the river. The proposed wall will greatly impede that and thus inevitably greatly diminish the quality of life here.

It will do irreparable harm to the environment and wildlife habitat.

It will do absolutely nothing to strengthen national security.

Our only recourse and hope at this point is a massive, steady, insistent protest sent to legislators in Austin and Washington. We have to raise our voices - now, today.

James' departure marks a new low

Editor:

Barrington Broadcasting has reached a new low in media and human relations. Unfortunately, dollars and youth wield greater weight than personality, loyalty, experience and wisdom.

The company's dismissal of Larry James for whatever reasons (not retirement) has placed Barrington at the bottom of the heap. Cheap, sensationalist journalism has replaced honest, factual reporting by individuals who care about their employer and their community. Where else can someone devote more than 40 years to a community he loved and showed unfailing concern about and get axed in a matter of minutes for unstated reasons?

I have known Larry for 15 years and in our more than 30 years of visiting South Padre for vacation I watched his ‘casts and relied on his truthful, honest assessment of local weather conditions.

KGBT's management and Barrington corporate have truly committed a fatal error in their handling of this honorable, devoted member of the Rio Grande Valley. I have worked in both radio and television on air, as a producer and entertainer for the past 40 years in the San Antonio market, both for Clear Channel and the Cox Radio group.

Larry is a true professional and I hold him in high regard. He will be missed. Whoever picks him up will be the true winner. Unfortunately, Barrington Broadcasting will not!
