RGV Capsules: Errors coast Roadrunners in Game 2 loss

EDINBURG - The Edinburg Roadrunners committed three costly errors helping the Amarillo Dillas take Game 2 of the United League Championship Series 6-3 on Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. 

With the series tied at 1, both teams head to Amarillo for Games 3, 4 and 5 (if necessary). 

The Dillas (1-1) got the scoring started in the top of the first against Jose Pablo Oyervidez (1-1).  Carlos Figueroa hit a two-out single to center field and then moved to second after a throwing error.  Julio Martinez followed with an RBI single, allowing Figueroa to score and making it 1-0 Amarillo.

Joaquin Rodriguez started the top of the third with a single then moved to third on an errant pickoff throw.  One out later, Martinez hit another RBI single allowing Rodriguez to score extending the Dillas lead 2-0.

The Roadrunners (1-1) got on the score board in the bottom of the fourth.  Felix Molina led off the inning with a double and then moved to third on a ground ball.  Daryl Jones then hit an RBI ground out to second that allowed Molina to score cutting Amarillo’s lead 2-1. 

In the top of the fifth, the Dillas added another run with another RBI single by Martinez that allowed Rodriguez to score which made it 3-1.

Back-to-back single by Kevin Butler and Jermel Lomack started the top of the sixth for Amarillo.  After a sacrifice bunt by Adam De La Garza, Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly allowing Butler to score from third. Martinez then hit a single to first base but a fielding error on the throw allowed Lomack to score extending the Dillas lead 5-1.

Edinburg answered in the bottom of the sixth against Ryan Mitchell (2-0). Wilmer Pino reached on a one-out single and then moved to third after Molina hit a double to right field.  With two outs in the inning, Jones then hit an RBI single scoring Pino from third. Ambiorix Concepcion followed with an RBI single to center field that allowed Molina to score cutting into the Amarillo lead 5-3. 

The Dillas picked up an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Lomack that allowed Rob Recuenco to score making it 6-3.

Ramon Geronimo came in and got the final four outs of the game to pick up the save and giving the Dillas the 6-3 victory. 

The Roadrunners and Dillas will play Game 3 of the United League Championship Series Sunday night at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa. Mark DiBernardo is expected to pitch for Edinburg, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

Roadrunners win Game 1 with walkoff

EDINBURG - The Edinburg Roadrunners defeated the Amarillo Dillas 3-2 in 10 innings with a walk-off double from Nelson Teilon at Edinburg Baseball Stadium to take a 1-0 lead in the United League Baseball Championship Series.

The Dillas (2-1) got on the scoreboard in the top of the third against starter Tim Haines. With two outs, Joaquin Rodriguez hit a triple to right field and then came into score on an RBI single by Carlos Figueroa.

That is all Haines allowed after pitching seven innings while scattering four hits and striking out seven.

The Roadrunners (3-1) tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the third when Wilmer Pino hit a solo home run off of Ralph Roberts.  

Wilson Batista led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and then stole second base. Two outs later, Robert Matlock hit an RBI single to center field, allowing Batista to score and giving the Roadrunners the 2-1 lead.  

Amarillo tied the game at 2 with a two-out RBI single by Stephen Douglas in the top of the eighth inning off of reliever Rey Silva. 

In the top of the 10th, Matlock led off with a walk and then moved to second after Pino dropped down a sacrifice bunt. After an intentional walk to Felix Molina, Nelson Teilon hit an RBI double off of reliever J.R. Boling (0-1) allowing Matlock to score the game winning run giving Edinburg the 3-2 victory.

Julio Castro (1-0) got the win after pitching two-thirds of an inning and getting out of a jam with runners at first and third.
