UTB-TSC Capsules: Unbeaten Scorpions win twice, set up showdown with Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Two victories Friday at the Quality Inn Cougar Classic kept the eighth-ranked University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College undefeated after five volleyball matches this year, setting up a potential showdown for Saturday night with seventh-ranked Columbia College.

The Scorpions took a pair of tough 3-1 victories Friday in the first two tournament matches against two teams from Missouri. UTB-TSC won by scores of 25-23, 25-15, 21-25, 25-17 over Missouri Baptist and by scores of 20-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-22 over Lindenwood (Mo.)

UTB-TSC has two more matches Saturday. The Scorpions take on Friends University (Kan.) at 3 p.m. preceding the NAIA volleyball match of the week at 7 p.m., the only meeting this week between two teams ranked in the top 10. Friends (0-1) dropped a 3-0 match to Columbia College, which is 2-0 and is traditionally ranked in the NAIA top 25.

No statistics of Friday’s matches were immediately available.

Following Saturday’s matches, the Scorpions will be on the road for their Red River Athletic Conference opener Tuesday at Huston-Tillotson in Austin. The first Scorpions home match will be Sept. 14.

Lamar erupts for three second-half goals against Scorpions

BEAUMONT - Lamar University struck for two goals within a four-minute span in the second half and added another goal later to take a 5-2 win over the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College on Friday at the Lamar University Soccer Complex.

Lamar, a member of NCAA Division I's Southland Conference, is 1-2. The Scorpions are 1-1-1. The game was the first between the two schools in any sport.

The Cardinals scored first to take a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute before Linette Cuvillier's goal made it 1-1 in the 12th minute. The Scorpions took a 2-1 lead on Verena Wonsikowski's goal in the 28th minute, and the Scorpions led at halftime, 2-1.

Lamar tied the game in the 49th minute at 2-2.

With the score tied at 2, Lamar scored in the 65th minute to make it 3-2 and added another goal four minutes later to go ahead, 4-2. Lamar added its fifth goal in the 80th minute to make it 5-2.

Lamar dominated the statistics, with a 34-9 advantage on shots taken, and a 16-3 advantage on shots on goal.

Scorpions goalkeeper Emily Michna played the first 69 minutes, allowed four goals and had nine saves. Stephanie Reid played the final 21 minutes, allowed one goal and had two saves.

The five goals allowed ties a record for most goal allowed in one game. The Scorpions fell to Oklahoma Baptist 5-1 in 2007 and to Oklahoma City University 5-0 in 2008.

The matchup against the Scorpions is the only meeting for the Cardinals against an NAIA team. Conversely, the meeting for the Scorpions against Lamar is the only one on the schedule against an NCAA team.

UTB-TSC now has 12 days off before its next game Sept. 16 at Incarnate Word in San Antonio.

MEN’S SOCCER

Scorpions seek first victory of season

The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College men’s soccer team, which did not lose a game in 2009, looks for its first victory of 2010 when the Scorpions visit Houston for games Saturday and Sunday.

The Scorpions, 0-1-1 after a road trip to Mississippi last week, will face St. Thomas (2-0) at 6 p.m. Saturday at Crusader Stadium. The Scorpions then take on William Carey (1-0) at 2 p.m. Sunday at the same location.

UTB-TSC is ranked 16th in the NAIA coaches top 25 preseason poll. William Carey, 13-3-3 one year ago, is ranked 19th.

UTB-TSC was riding the nation’s longest unbeaten streak at 19 games before dropping a 2-1 decision to Belhaven (Miss.) last week. The Scorpions then tied Mid-Continent University (Ky.), 1-1.

The Scorpions, three-time Red River Athletic Conference champions, were 17-0-2 in 2009.

The weekend games mark the third and fourth of a seven-game road stretch to start the 2010 season. UTB-TSC will have its longest break of the season and rest until a two-game series Sept. 17 and 18 in Oklahoma.
