At-Large A candidate: Ernesto De Leon

Top 3 issues:

1. Jobs: The Brownsville Herald on April 16, 2007, reported “Low education mars RGV job growth.” Our area ranks 184 in low educational attainment in the state of Texas. It is therefore imperative that we work closely with Brownsville Independent School District (BISD) and the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College to address this problem. This current situation discourages potential employers.

2. Drainage and city streets: It is obvious that drainage and our city streets are in desperate need of repair. Flooding has been and ongoing problem and needs to be ad-dressed. I believe that the mayor and city commissioners have already begun to ad-dress the problem of our city streets and drainage, and these projects are well under way. If and when elected, this issue would be a top priority of mine, and I will continue to oversee these projects.

3. PUB bills and taxes: The high cost of living in our city has become unaffordable to many of our citizens. A large number of our citizens are losing their American dream of owning a home because they can no longer afford the high taxes and PUB bills. We have numerous taxing entities in our city. Texas Southmost College, Brownsville Inde-pendent School District, South Texas ISD, Brownsville Navigation District, Cameron County and the city of Brownsville. I wish I had the answer to solve these problems. I will always listen to suggestions to help Brownsville become a better place to live.
