Red Light project reps to visit San Benito
Officials say city won’t be enticed to install cameras
SAN BENITO — Representatives from the Red Light Enforcement Project will give a presentation today during a special city commissioners meeting, but officials said the city won’t be enticed to install cameras at red lights.
The project is directed by RedFlex Traffic Systems, the Arizona company that has a three-year contract with the city of Harlingen to catch red-light violators with cameras installed at selected intersections.
City Manager Victor Treviño said the company approached officials here about making a presentation to the commission.
“We’re being really courteous,” Treviño said of meeting with the company representatives. “But our city is not interested.”
By means of high-tech cameras, drivers who run red lights are photographed and mailed a citation.
The company and Harlingen city officials have said the cameras are used to decrease the number of accidents.
In other matters, as a result of last week’s regular commission meeting where commissioners said they were irritated with how the streets were being maintained and repaired, city officials will give a presentation on the projected street maintenance for July 25-Aug. 25.
Treviño said the commission would receive a monthly progress report for work starting and ending on the 25th of each month.
Commissioners also will discuss solid waste collection rates being charged by BFI for residents and businesses. There will also be a second budget workshop for the upcoming fiscal year.
The special meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the San Benito Municipal Building, 401 N. Sam Houston Blvd.
