Golf Capsules: Toms, Villegas lead low scores at Humana Challenge
LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) — A little extra time off this winter left David Toms and Camilo Villegas feeling fresh for the Humana Challenge.
Toms and Villegas shot 9-under 63 to top a leaderboard dotted with impressive scores in the opening round Thursday.
Ted Potter Jr., Sang-moon Bae, Brandt Snedeker and Bob Estes were one stroke behind in postcard-perfect weather on the pro-am tournament's three generous Palm Springs-area courses.
Villegas and Toms both played bogey-free at the erstwhile Bob Hope Classic, which has dropped one day of its traditional five-round format this year.
After playing on the winning U.S. team in the Presidents Cup, Toms passed on a hard-to-get spot in the lucrative Chevron World Challenge in December to spend extra time with his family. He shook off an unimpressive start to the new season in Hawaii with excellent play alongside Presidents Cup teammate Phil Mickelson at La Quinta Country Club, which features the tournament's toughest course.
Toms also got a boost playing alongside Mickelson, who struggled to a 74. Toms made a 30-foot birdie putt on the sixth hole right after Mickelson holed an eagle putt, ratcheting up the energy in an often staid tournament.
"That's probably the biggest crowd I've ever had playing golf here," Toms said. "It was nice to play a good round and have people energized and out there cheering for your birdies."
Villegas recovered from his disappointing 2011 with an extended break in his native Colombia and Florida. In his tournament debut, he made nine birdies in his first crack at the Nicklaus Private course, coasting through a round he could barely recall after he finished it.
"You feel that you're a little rusty, but at the same time, you're mentally fresh," said Villegas, a three-time PGA Tour winner. "It's a funny game. Sometimes being mentally fresh is more important."
The Humana Challenge has been invigorated by multiple changes including its new title sponsor, an increased purse and a partnership with the Clinton Foundation to promote healthy lifestyles. Bill Clinton, who will play alongside old friend Greg Norman on Saturday, showed up to the event Thursday.
Enthusiastic crowds also showed up in the Coachella Valley to cheer on an improved field including Mickelson, defending champion Jhonattan Vegas and world No. 8 Dustin Johnson, who matched Norman at 72 in the Shark's first Palm Springs appearance since 1986.
Toms and Villegas aren't the only players using the week to round into form for bigger challenges ahead. Rough spots in their games are more easily fixed in Palm Springs' perfect weather — although rain could be headed to the valley for the weekend.
"Nothing really worked," Norman said after his first PGA Tour start since 2009. "It was just pure rust, that's all it was. Just rusty, rusty, rusty."
Potter made five consecutive birdies after the turn in his round, while the 45-year-old Estes, who hasn't won since 2002, finished with consecutive birdies to move into a third-place tie.
Another change to the tournament was an immediate hit with the pros: Instead of playing with three amateur partners in each of the first four rounds, two pros are teaming with two players, which makes for more fun.
"I've looked at the pairings, and I can tell that a lot of guys are playing with their friends and other golfers, the guys that are close," said Toms, who counts Mickelson as a close friend.
Champions
Tour season opens in Hawaii
KAUPULEHU-KONA, Hawaii (AP) — John Cook and Tom Lehman finished atop the leaderboard at Hualalai to open the 2011 Champions Tour season. The rest of the year went pretty much the same way with each player claiming three events on the 50-and-over circuit.
Cook is back in Hawaii to defend his title at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship, which starts Friday and is the first of 23 official events on the 2012 schedule.
Lehman is coming off a strong season in which he won a career-best $2.1 million en route to claiming the money title and player of the year honors. Following his runner-up finish at Hualalai, he went on to win three of his first seven starts, including beating Peter Senior in a two-hole playoff at the Regions Tradition.
Lehman had 12 top-10 finishes last year, leading the tour in driving and greens in regulation. He was second in scoring to Mark Calcavecchia in scoring. Lehman became the first player to earn player of the year honors on the Nationwide Tour (1991), PGA Tour (1996) and Champions Tour (2011).
Last year, Cook birdied five straight holes after the turn to win at Hualalai to hold off Lehman by two strokes.
The two are among 41 players entered this year in the winners-only event that includes nine members of the World Golf Hall of Fame and eight former Ryder Cup captains.
Six players will be making their Hualalai debut, including Calcavecchia, Jay Don Blake, Olin Browne, Brad Faxon, John Huston and Kenny Perry.
Eight players in this year's field are age 60 and over, led by 66-year-old Hale Irwin, who is making his 17th straight appearance here. Irwin won the event in 2007 and 1997. The 2007 win was the last of his record 45 career titles on the Champions Tour.
While the players work to get back into tournament shape, Hualalai is probably the best place to do it. For eight of the last nine years, the par-72, Jack Nickalus-designed resort course has been the easiest layout on the Champions Tour.
International
Three qualify for British Open in July
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Brazil's Adilson Da Silva and South African pair Grant Veenstra and Andrew Georgiou will play in this year's British Open after finishing in the top three of a 36-hole international qualifier on Thursday.
Veenstra won the two-day qualifying event at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington with a 6-under 138, with Georgiou and Da Silva were another shot back in the 41-man field.
Overnight leader Tim Sluiter of the Netherlands followed up a first-round 66 with a 78, despite opening up with an eagle, to finish tied for 18th.
The British Open will be staged at Royal Lytham & St. Annes from July 19-22.
Colsaerts leads with course-record 64 in South Africa
GEORGE, South Africa (AP) — Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium opened with a course record 9-under-par 64 to lead the first round of the Volvo Golf Champions at The Links at Fancourt on Thursday.
Colsaerts has a four-stroke lead over South Africa's Branden Grace and Thomas Aiken and England's Tom Lewis. The previous course record was 68 set by Tim Clark and Ross Fisher in the first round of the 2005 South African Open.
Padraig Harrington showed glimpses of a return to form with a 69, despite a double-bogey 7 at the last hole.
