San Benito plans new 4th of July festival

SAN BENITO - Vendors looking to be a part of the city's Fourth of July Resaca Fest can begin signing up today.
Days after last year's successful Fourth of July event at the Heavin Resaca Trails, community members started planning for this year's event. They created the Resaca Fest, which organizers say will include a night of food, music and family fun.
"It's time for San Benito to have a festival to call our own," said Oscar Medrano, the festival's chairman.
Until June 30, food vendors can register at the San Benito Chamber of Commerce. Booth rental is $75 per food booth, said Zeke Padilla, chamber president.
There is a limit for different types of item, he said. For example, there will only be two booths for fajitas. He expects to have 20 food vendors.
The event will also feature a mini-market day for arts and crafts. Space for vendors is $25 and an additional $3 per table, Padilla said.
"We welcome all vendors," he said.
The Resaca Fest committee meets every Wednesday at the San Benito Municipal Building at 6 p.m. to plan the free festival. Aside from vendors, the committee is also seeking volunteers for the event.
"If anyone wants to help out, from ushering folks to answering questions and manning booths, they can call the office," Padilla said.
Medrano said the weekly planning events are going along smoothly.
"The committee has been working very hard," Medrano said.
Organizers are also seeking entertainment, Medrano said.
"We're very excited," he said.
