Suspect dead, officer wounded after Alice bank heist try
Comments 0 | Recommend 0ALICE, Texas (AP) - A bank robbery suspect is dead and a police officer is hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the leg after an attempted holdup at a Wells Fargo Bank in the South Texas town of Alice.
Police identified the dead suspect as 22-year-old Juan Villarreal (vee-yah-ray-AL') of San Diego. Investigators say he was shot and killed after he and at least one other person tried to rob the bank Thursday.
Alice police Officer Daniel Elizondo was airlifted to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi. Hospital spokeswoman Sherry Carr-Deer says he's in fair condition.
Police say another suspect is in custody and another may still be on the loose.
