Drug dog follows its nose; sniffs out pot at house

NEAR WESLACO — Sheriff's deputies made two arrests after receiving a tip about marijuana at a house between Weslaco and Mercedes on Wednesday.

Hidalgo County Sheriff's deputies showed up at the house adjacent to Don's Auto Parts, west of Mile 2 West Road along Business 83 near Weslaco about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

"Bombix," a drug detector dog, sniffed around the outside of the house and alerted deputies to the scent of drugs inside the house.

Investigators obtained a search warrant and found 210 pounds of marijuana inside the house.

Deputies arrested Elbert Arce, 26, and Agustin Cruz, 26, for felony possession of marijuana. The second degree felony charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine upon conviction.

Both men were booked at the Hidalgo County Jail and an arraignment is scheduled for today.
